Laser Welding Technology: Faster, Cleaner Metal Joining With Fiber Lasers
Laser welding joins metal by focusing a high-energy-density beam onto a very small spot, melting the workpiece in milliseconds. In fiber laser systems the beam is generated at 1064 nm, carried through a flexible optical fiber and shaped by a handheld or robotic head. The result is a narrow, deep weld with a small heat-affected zone — far less distortion than TIG or MIG on the same joint.
Two Welding Modes
At lower power density the process runs in conduction mode, producing smooth cosmetic seams on thin sheet. Above a threshold, the beam forms a vapour cavity — the keyhole — that lets energy penetrate deeply while the surrounding metal stays cool. An automatic wire feeder adds filler for gaps and thicker sections; shielding gas protects the molten pool from oxidation.
Typical System Configurations
- Water-cooled handheld, 4-in-1 — 1000 W to 3000 W, welding 0.5–8 mm plate, with welding, cutting, cleaning and weld-seam cleaning in one unit, built-in chiller and auto wire feeder.
- Air-cooled handheld — 1000 W to 2000 W, 0.5–6 mm, no external chiller, plug-and-play for on-site repair and mobile welding.
- QCW pulsed spot welder — 150 W to 300 W with peak power up to 3000 W and 0.2–2.0 mm spot size, for jewellery, mould repair and micro-joining under a stereoscopic microscope.
Laser Versus Arc Welding
| Aspect | Fiber Laser | TIG / MIG |
|---|---|---|
| Travel speed | 3–10× faster | Baseline |
| Heat input & distortion | Low, minimal warping | High, noticeable warping |
| Operator skill | Short learning curve | Years of practice |
| Post-weld work | Little or no grinding | Grinding and finishing required |
| Consumables | Wire and gas only | Electrodes, wire, gas |
Shielding Gas, Generated On Site
Nitrogen is the standard shielding gas for stainless and carbon steel. A PSA nitrogen generator produces 99.5% to 99.999% purity straight from compressed air at 5–30 Nm³/h, removing cylinder rental, delivery and changeover downtime — typically cutting gas cost by around 80% for continuous production.
Where It Pays Off
Sheet metal enclosures and cabinets, machine frames and guards, kitchen and food equipment, automotive repair, battery trays, and jewellery or mould restoration — anywhere a clean seam matters more than a low equipment price. With a handheld head, the same operator covers three to four times more linear metres per shift than with a torch.
